About Our Lady of Glastonbury Orthodox Church

Our Lady of Glastonbury Orthodox Church at 390 Cannon Street East in Hamilton Ontario is the monastery chapel of Christ the Saviour Monastery (Christminster) which is a Benedictine western rite monastery in the Russian Orthodox Church. In addition Christminster uses the adjoining facilities which include the monastic quarters, a Scriptorium and Refectory. Our Lady of Glastonbury Orthodox Church is used by the monks of Christminster along with Orthodox faithful throughout Southern Ontario who wish to worship in the Western Rite Tradition. Along with a Sunday High Mass there is, in the Benedictine Tradition, a daily cycle of prayer including Matins, Lauds, Tierce, the Mass, Angelus, Sext, None, and Vespers. The web site posts those services that are open to the public. Additionally the web site provides information linked to Christminster Monastery, information specifically of interest to the Orthodox faithful and inquirers who wish to be a part of the cycle of prayer and Sacrament at Our Lady of Glastonbury Orthodox Church, as well as information on the Orthodox Faith, links to web sites of other canonical Orthodox jurisdictions as well as other parishes and monasteries of the Orthodox Western Rite, including the Antiochian Western Rite Vicariate with whom Christminster has always maintained a warm relationship. Additionally there is news of upcoming informational sessions, meetings, Liturgies, and visiting speakers coming to other areas of Southern Ontario.

All are welcomed to the public services at Our Lady of Glastonbury Orthodox Church, which is under the spiritual direction of Christminster and its Abbot Dom James M. Deschene. In the Orthodox Church only those who are Orthodox and are properly prepared by prayer, fasting and recent confession may receive Communion. Others may come to the Altar rail for a blessing. There is a special welcome for inquirers. Please identify yourself and we will do our best to answer any questions and make you feel at home.

Christminster Announcement

On Sunday, 1 March/16 February 2009, notice was received from Metropolitan Hilarion of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia, that the monastery and mission of Christminster and Our Lady of Glastonbury Orthodox Church, in Hamilton, Ontario, would henceforth be directly under the arch-pastoral oversight of the Metropolitan himself, assisted by his Vicar Bishop Jerome, Bishop of Manhattan. Bishop Gabriel, the ruling Bishop of Canada, had

Metropolitan Hilarion

requested this change in light of his own lack of familiarity with the Orthodox western rite and its usages.

Bishop Jerome, the former Father John Shaw, is a long-time friend of Christminster and a scholar deeply learned in western liturgics.

We are grateful to each of these hierarchs for their pastoral concern for the well-being of our mission and work.
